Open Letter

An Open Letter to the Music Industry and Community--

Abuse of power is unacceptable. Sexual misconduct and abuse will no longer be tolerated in our community.

Our voices are the sound of progress. We are artists and professionals of the music industry assembling to take action. Your participation and cooperation is critical to this cause. We are calling for help and support from all artists, musicians, labels, venues, managers, agents, bookers, producers, promoters, distributors, retailers, streaming services, publicists, journalists, photographers, videographers, television and radio networks, patrons.

Abuse is abuse. All forms in which it presents itself are impermissible. This includes but is not limited to: rape; physical assault; sexual assault; unwanted touching; sexual harassment; sexualized remarks; persuasion or expectation of sexual favors in exchange for career advancement and/or privileges; intimidation and threatening; silencing; verbal abuse; psychological abuse; manipulation. Without immediate action to eradicate these behaviors and all attitudes that excuse or encourage them, many of our peers remain in danger.

In recent weeks countless individuals have come forward to reveal personal accounts of having been made casualty by the whims of predators - predators who acted without fear of consequence or fallback. To provide justice and healing to past, present and potential victims, we cannot let this movement halt here.

We are in need of more organized entities that will represent communal interests and enforce change in our most complicated arenas. It is our mission to take a stand against the epidemic of toxic behaviors in our industry, by joining to amplify the voices of those in our community who’ve historically been diminished, undervalued, or ignored; valuable voices that have too often left the artistic conversation due to rampant abuse. We recognize our collective voice as a vessel for hosting this evolving conversation, sharing resources and offering support to survivors, so that we all may participate in the decision making that will lead us to effectively holding abusers accountable and applying appropriate consequences for unethical actions.

No longer will we allow the boasted “all in the name of rock ‘n’ roll” mentality and its exponents to echo within our industry. We expect those in power to hold one another accountable, regardless of career longevity, merits, contributions, or prior loyalty, and we implore our community at large to end complicity with the industry of yesterday whose culture it has been to glamorize, reward, promote and capitalize on violent, demeaning, exploitative and discriminating treatment of women, POC, LGBTQ, non-binary, disabled individuals, minors and all culturally disenfranchised people.

We agree that our physical and virtual spaces must be made safer for artists, professionals and spectators alike. We are no longer willing to keep those at a disadvantage at risk by silently allowing the power-abusing to shape the conversation around their own innocence, rehabilitation and value. All associated with sexual misconduct or abuse must be held responsible going forward. We demand responses from those identified as abusers, as well as the individuals and entities that remain in support of them. Failure to respond, terminate or disassociate from a known abuser will be recognized as a danger to the community. We pledge to make public these transgressions and demand withdrawal of monetary, verbal and virtual support of such individuals and entities.

Our community is ready to progress. We invite your voice to this cause. Please join us in finally bringing an end to the sound of silence.
